Understanding the Laws That Protect You
Legitimate credit repair is grounded in federal consumer protection law. These are the key statutes and entities that govern the credit repair process.
Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)
The FCRA (15 U.S.C. § 1681) is the primary federal law governing consumer credit reports. It gives consumers the right to dispute inaccurate information and requires bureaus to investigate within 30 days.
Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA)
The CROA (15 U.S.C. § 1679) regulates all credit repair companies in the U.S. It prohibits advance fees, requires written contracts, and gives consumers a cancellation right before work begins.
Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA)
The FDCPA (15 U.S.C. § 1692) prohibits abusive or deceptive practices by debt collectors. Consumers have the right to request debt validation within 30 days of first contact.
The FICO® Score
A FICO® Score is a three-digit number from 300 to 850, developed by Fair Isaac Corporation and used by roughly 90% of top U.S. lenders. It is one of several scoring models, so your number can differ between models and between bureaus.
The Three Major Credit Bureaus
The three national reporting agencies — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — each maintain a separate credit file. Disputes can be filed with each under FCRA Section 611.
What Can Be Disputed
Disputable items include inaccurate late payments, unverifiable collections, duplicate entries, and items past the seven-year limit. Only inaccurate, unverifiable, or outdated items can be removed.
How Maximum Score Builders’ Credit Repair Works
Each step is grounded in federal consumer protection law. This is the process our verified clients experienced on their way to better credit.
Free 3-Bureau Report Review
A specialist pulls and reviews your Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion reports, identifying inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable items.
Written Contract
Before any work begins, a written service agreement lists all services, fees, and your cancellation rights.
FCRA § 611 Dispute Filing
Formal, documented dispute letters go to each bureau. Each must investigate within 30 days of receipt.
Creditor & Collector Intervention
When bureau disputes alone aren't enough, we contact the creditor or collector directly for validation and resolution.
Ongoing Education & Monitoring
Our process doesn't end at removals. Clients receive personalized coaching to maintain and keep building their scores.
Your Rights Are Our Foundation
Every service Maximum Score Builders provides is structured around your federally protected consumer rights.
Your Right to Accurate Credit Data
The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires bureaus to maintain accurate files and gives you the right to dispute any information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable.
Your Right to a Fair Contract
The Credit Repair Organizations Act prohibits advance fees, requires written contracts, and provides a cancellation period before any credit repair work begins.
Your Right to Validate Debts
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act requires debt collectors to provide verification of any debt upon request, and prohibits abusive, deceptive, or unfair collection practices.
Your Right to Time-Limited Reporting
Most negative items — including collections, charge-offs, and late payments — can only remain on your credit report for seven years from the date of first delinquency.
