Why the off-season hurts your credit

Kern County runs on work that rises and falls with the seasons: farm and packing-house jobs, oil and gas, construction, and school-year positions. Your bills don’t take the winter off, so a few slow months can show up on your credit report for years:

  • Late payments. Payment history is the largest factor in FICO scores, about 35% of the score, according to FICO. One payment reported 30 or more days late can stay on your report for up to seven years.
  • High card balances. Using credit cards to cover groceries and rent in the slow months raises your utilization, which can lower your scores until the balances come down.
  • Collections. A medical bill or phone bill that slips during the off-season can end up with a collection agency, sometimes reported more than once under different names.
  • High-cost short-term loans. Payday and title loans can bridge a gap but often make the next slow season harder.

A plan for the slow months

  1. Line up due dates with your pay. Many creditors will move a due date if you ask. Paying everything in the weeks right after payday makes a missed payment less likely.
  2. Protect the minimum payment. Set up automatic minimum payments during your busy season and keep enough set aside to cover them through the off-season. A minimum paid on time keeps the account current.
  3. Call before you miss a payment. Ask your lender or card issuer about a hardship plan or a temporary payment change. Creditors decide whether to offer one, and asking early gives you more options.
  4. Pay balances down when the work comes back. Lower balances can help your scores once the new balances are reported.
  5. Check your reports after each season. Make sure late payments, balances, and collections are reported accurately, and dispute anything that is wrong.

Buying a home with seasonal income

Seasonal income can count toward a mortgage. Under Fannie Mae’s guidelines, lenders generally look for a two-year history of seasonal income and average your earnings over that period. Seasonal unemployment benefits can also count when they are tied to layoffs that recur each year and are reported on your tax returns.

That makes clean records important: file your taxes every year, keep your W-2s and pay stubs, and keep your credit report free of errors before you apply. Your lender makes the final decision and may have its own requirements.

How we help

We review your Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion reports with you and look for items that may be inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable, such as a late payment reported for a month you paid, a collection listed twice, or a balance that was paid but still shows as owed. We help you dispute those items under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and explain how to keep your credit steady through the next slow season.

If a late payment is accurate, it cannot be disputed away. We can explain your options, such as asking the creditor for a goodwill adjustment, which creditors are not required to grant.

Common questions

Can you remove late payments from my off-season?

Only if they are reported inaccurately. If a late payment is wrong, incomplete, or can’t be verified, you have the right to dispute it. Accurate late payments can stay on your report for up to seven years, and no one can legally remove accurate, verifiable information.

Can seasonal income qualify me for a mortgage?

It can. Under Fannie Mae’s guidelines, lenders generally look for a two-year history of seasonal income and average your earnings. Seasonal unemployment benefits can count when they recur each year and appear on your tax returns. Your lender makes the final decision.

What should I do if I know I’ll miss a payment this winter?

Call the creditor before the due date and ask about a hardship plan or a temporary payment change. Creditors are not required to offer one, but asking early usually gives you more options than calling after the account is already late.

How much does it cost?

Emerald Plan is $94.99 a month after a $195 first-work fee, and Maximum Impact Plan is $109.99 a month after a $265 first-work fee. Fees are billed only after work is performed, and credit monitoring is paid separately to the provider you choose. The consultation is free.

Do you offer help in Spanish?

Yes. Our team is bilingual, and consultations, credit report reviews, and support are available in Spanish. Sí, hablamos español.
